A Friendly World Syndrome

I dreamt. I dreamt of a world diseased with the “friendly world syndrome”. I dreamt of a world with no conflicts but only discussable matters. A world with no wars. A world where no one is scared anymore. No one is scared of the terror attacks, sick politics, effects of corruption, wars, and being technologically left out.

What if the whole world became one? What if all the countries came together as one? What if there were no international conspiracies? What if…?

Today, we have lost our mission. It’s sad to say but we as human beings have lost the path and the goal. We are headed fast towards a goal but the sad part is that the goal itself is our own destruction. Moreover even when we are being told about this fact, still most of us tend to neglect it straight-away. It has been depicted in several movies such as the recent “2012” and the documentary “An Inconvenient Truth”, that we all are headed towards a common goal that is the annihilation of all humans. But again we chose to neglect.

I seriously fear that in the race amongst us for greater power, advanced technology, and supremacy, we are forgetting our ethics and our responsibilities towards our mother nature and the planet earth that we live upon. “Mother nature” is just a mere phrase today and it seems nobody understands the relevance of the word “mother” in it. We are eating upon our natural reserves at a speed that is more than the required and surely very alarming. We want everything. Yes, WE want everything and do not really care about what is left for the generations to come.

Moreover, everything has become mechanized. We want, rather, need machines for everything. To wake up, to bathe, to relax, to move, to play, to wash, to cook, to even breathe! For that, we have air purifiers, because of the fact that there is pollution, due to cars. Technologies are being created and updated everyday without much thought about its ill effects.

There are advertisements which directly or indirectly try to make people aware of the facts such as extinction of animals, depletion of resources, etc., mostly put to no use. I discussed with some of my friends about the “IDEA” ad that is being aired which spreads the message of saving paper and thus trees to conserve the environment. They all praised the ad and had a good laugh for the first few times of their exposure to the ad. But when I asked them what did they seriously learn from it, an average comment was like “yeah, we should save paper, but you know they only air it to increase their sales and we should not get in their trap, and still there are many trees in the world to produce enough of paper. Also, as it is we study less, and you are asking us to save MORE paper!”

As it is, the countries are depleting world’s resources at an alarming rate, to stay ahead in the technological race, and on top of that, if we, citizens will not put in our sincere effort to conserve the environment, then I fear, that our (civilization’s) end is not too far. We can control the technological race by adapting and accepting the technology just not as it comes. I mean people will produce and can sell only what everyone buys. If we reduce our consumption of paper, the companies will produce paper in lesser quantities. It’s simple.

But everyone it seems, wants to clear out his robe, and move on. We use and take paper for granted and then expect companies to go for social responsibilities and carry out tasks to conserve the environment. Not only with paper is such a case. We (with a few exceptions), do not assume proper care in using any of the technologies. The much talked about electricity. It seems there is a “save electricity” campaign beginning everyday in some corner of the world. But the fact that I mention this factor, here in this web log is that I have personally witnessed sheer carelessness regarding the use of electricity. People only care to leave, and thus often leave the switches ON.

There are a lot more of things to talk about under the same topic but I believe that it is not what we say, rather, it is what we think and what we believe in, that brings a favourable change, and if the message is clear to even a few people through this log, the rest of the matters will automatically be taken care of, as the potential of an enlightened mind is boundless. It is just the enlightenment that is necessary.

I wish not to teach anything to anyone but to initiate minds to think on themselves.

  1. Great job Ashok.I am in complete agreement with you and I sincerely hope that these simple yet meaningful lines of yours will help people to understand that how each one of us can contribute in our own way to make our "MOTHER EARTH" a better place to live in.
